Frequently Asked Questions
It comes down to how you want to control the roof and how hard your weather is. The Pro+ is our hand-adjustable pergola. You set the louvers by hand, and it delivers the quality of a $30,000 structure at a fraction of the cost. It is the smartest value in outdoor living and the right call for most American backyards. The Horizon is our fully motorized Gen 5 flagship: control the roof from your phone, remote, or voice, with integrated LED lighting, double-layer louvers, and a Category 5 wind rating. The Apex is our most rugged pergola, built from more aluminum than anything else we make and engineered for the harshest conditions on earth: coastal lots, exposed hilltops, and properties that take the full force of winter. Put simply: the Pro+ is the smartest value, the Horizon is the smart flagship, and the Apex is the fortress.

The Pro+ is a modern aluminum pergola with a hand-adjustable louvered roof. Open the louvers for sun and breeze, angle them for filtered light, or close them to block rain and heat. It is engineered from 6063-T5 high-grade aluminum on a TitanCore™ reinforced frame, finished in a clean Scandinavian design that suits almost any home. It is America's most popular pergola for one reason: it delivers the quality of a $30,000 structure at a fraction of the cost.
The Horizon is our Gen 5 flagship, the most advanced pergola we have ever built. Where the Pro+ is hand-adjustable, the Horizon is fully motorized: you control the roof from your phone, Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit. It is forged from T6 aerospace-grade aluminum (43% stronger than the Pro+'s T5), finished in AkzoNobel premium coating on marine-grade stainless baseplates, rated for Category 5 hurricane winds, fitted with integrated LED lighting, and topped with premium double-layer louvers. If the Pro+ is the smartest value in outdoor living, the Horizon is the ceiling of what is possible.
The Apex (formerly the Master+) is our most rugged pergola, engineered for the harshest conditions on earth. It is built from T6 aerospace aluminum with up to 5x the mass of a cheap pergola (and 42% more than our own Horizon), AeroCore Pro™ dual-chamber louvers, marine-grade stainless baseplates, and an AkzoNobel coating, rated to 167 mph and 65 PSF, and designed to last 40+ years. Think of it this way: the Pro+ is the smartest value, the Horizon is the smart flagship, and the Apex is the fortress. The one you buy for a coastal lot, an exposed hilltop, or a property that takes the full force of winter.
No. The Pro+ is built to the same core standard as the rest of the range: rust-proof aluminum, a TitanCore™ reinforced frame, a three-layer powder coat, a 120 mph wind rating, and a 10-year warranty. The difference is not quality. It comes down to how you control the roof and how much extreme weather it is built for. The Pro+ adjusts by hand instead of by motor, and it is made for the weather a normal backyard actually sees rather than a coastal hurricane. For most homes, that is exactly the right pergola, and it is why it is our most popular model.
The Apex. It is purpose-built for coastal salt air, poolside, open hilltops, and sub-zero winters, with marine-grade SUS304 stainless baseplates, an AkzoNobel coating trusted on luxury yachts, a 167 mph (Category 5) wind rating, and a 65 PSF snow load. The Horizon is also Category 5 rated (165 mph closed) and handles coastal conditions well, so it is a strong choice if you want the fortress-grade smart pergola without the Apex’s maximum mass. If your site is a standard backyard rather than a punishing exposure, the Pro+ or Horizon will serve you well.
Choose manual (Pro+) if you like the idea of a pergola with nothing to update, recharge, or troubleshoot. You adjust the louvers by hand in seconds, and that is the whole system. Choose motorized (Horizon or Apex) if you want to open, close, and angle the roof from your phone, a remote, or your voice, add an optional rain sensor that closes the louvers at the first drop, and control integrated lighting from the same app. All three are engineered to last decades; the motor simply adds convenience and smart-home control on top.
By selling direct. We ship straight from our factory to your driveway, instead of passing the pergola through importers, distributors, dealers, and showrooms along the way. Cutting out those steps saves a lot, and we pass that saving on to you. The materials and build quality are the same as pergolas costing tens of thousands more. You are simply not paying for all the stops in between.
More than most homeowners expect, and it is one of the best reasons to buy. A pergola turns unused yard into a finished, usable outdoor room, and buyers notice. The Sun reported that adding a quality pergola can raise a home's value by around $27,000. For many owners that is more than the pergola costs, so it can effectively pay for itself: you enjoy it for years, then recover the cost (or more) when you sell. Add the everyday wins on top, shade, livable square footage, lower cooling costs near the house, and a clear design upgrade, and the decision gets easy.
Yes. We offer financing through Affirm, so you can spread the cost over time instead of paying it all at once. Choose Affirm at checkout: qualified buyers can get 0% APR for 6 months, and 12 or 24 month plans are also available (the longer plans carry interest paid to Affirm). Pick the option that fits your budget and complete your order.
All three models come in Dark Gray and White. The Pro+ and Horizon come in a range of standard sizes, and the Apex adds a few larger sizes, up to 13’ x 23’ and 13’ x 26’, for covering bigger areas. The Horizon and Apex can be set up freestanding or mounted to the house. To see every size and the current colors, take a look at the product page or give one of our pergola experts a call, and we will help you find the right fit for your space.
The Pro+ ships at a standard height of about 8.2 feet and is not adjustable out of the box. Some customers raise it by setting the posts on small platforms or lower it by trimming the legs, but trimming the legs voids the warranty, so we recommend planning your surface height first. If ceiling height is a priority for your project, ask a pergola expert before you order and we will help you plan it.
Choose freestanding if the pergola will sit out in the yard, over a patio, or by the pool as its own structure. Choose wall-mounted (available on the Horizon and Apex) if you want to attach it to the house to create a seamless indoor-outdoor room off a back wall. Both configurations carry the same materials, ratings, and warranty.
These are the two things that make the Pro+ frame so solid. TitanCore™ is the frame itself, reinforced with corner brackets and bracing on the inside that make it more than 30% stronger and stiffer. WindLock™ is the way the louvers are held in place, so they rattle far less in the wind and stand up better to strong gusts. Together, they are why a hand-cranked pergola can be certified to handle 120 mph winds.
The Horizon uses double-layer louvers with built-in dampeners, so they stay quiet in a storm, seal out the rain, and keep it up to 15°F cooler underneath. The Apex goes a step further with AeroCore Pro™ dual-chamber louvers. Each one is a single solid piece of aluminum with hollow chambers inside for extra strength, and there is a rubber seal between every blade to keep water out. This is what lets both pergolas stand up to Category 5 winds and heavy snow.
The Horizon and Apex include integrated SoftGlow™ dual-color LED lighting: warm and cool white, recessed into the structure with zero visible wiring, so the space stays usable and beautiful after sunset. It is built into the pergola, not bolted on afterward, and it is dimmable on the Apex. The Pro+ does not include integrated lighting, but LED lighting can be added as an accessory.
Both motorized models let you open, close, and tilt the louvers (0 to 135° of rotation) from the Hansø smartphone app, the included remote, or your voice through Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit, all out of the box, with no extra hardware. You can run it from the couch, from inside, or remotely. The motor is sealed for permanent outdoor exposure and runs virtually silent.
It is an optional add-on for the motorized models. The Hansø rain sensor detects the first drops of rain and automatically closes your pergola louvers, so your furniture and your evening never get caught out in a downpour. You can add it at checkout or later.
Yes. Every Hansø pergola is a system, not just a frame. Depending on the model you can add retractable or motorized side shades for sun and privacy, aluminum slat walls or glass walls to create a sheltered near-enclosed room, electric heaters to extend the season, LED lighting, and even Bluetooth speakers. Add what you want up front, or expand later.
All ratings are independently tested. The Pro+ is rated up to 120 mph, which is Category 3 hurricane strength. The Horizon is Category 5 rated, tested to 165 mph with the louvers closed and properly anchored to the ground, and 120 mph with them open. The Apex is the strongest of the three, tested to 167 mph and also Category 5. For reference, anything over 157 mph is the strongest category of hurricane there is.
The Pro+ is rated for roof loads up to 25 PSF, the Horizon up to 60 PSF, and the Apex up to 65 PSF, more weight than sits on the average rooftop. And with any of them, opening the louvers lets snow fall straight through, so there is nothing to accumulate. Winter becomes just another Tuesday underneath.
Close the louvers and the roof sheds water. On the Pro+, rain runs off the angled S-shaped louvers into the frame’s built-in channels. On the Horizon and Apex, the double-layer or dual-chamber louvers channel water into an integrated gutter system routed down through the poles themselves: nothing drips, nothing drains outside the structure, nothing you see or hear. In a rare once-a-decade downpour there may be minor overflow, exactly like a house gutter in an extreme storm, and the system clears within minutes.
No. Aluminum does not rust or rot, and it will not warp like wood. The Pro+’s three-layer powder coat and the Horizon and Apex’s AkzoNobel premium coating are built to resist chips, scratches, UV, and fading, and the AkzoNobel finish carries a 10-year guarantee against fade and corrosion. All it asks for is an occasional wipe-down.
The Horizon and especially the Apex are built for it. Both use marine-grade SUS304 stainless baseplates and an AkzoNobel coating trusted on luxury yachts and by NASA, engineered to shrug off salt air, poolside chemicals, and sub-zero winters. The Apex is our first recommendation for a true coastal or poolside install.
Yes. The Horizon and Apex are designed from the ground up as outdoor smart structures, not indoor gadgets moved outside. The motor, wiring, and lighting are sealed for permanent exposure to rain, heat, and cold, and the 10-year warranty covers the mechanism. It is engineered to live outdoors, year-round.
Yes. If you can assemble flat-pack furniture, you can assemble a Hansø. The parts are CNC-machined to snap together, and every pergola ships with a step-by-step manual and a full assembly video. Most customers finish the Pro+ or Horizon with two people in about two to four hours; the larger, heavier Apex typically takes two people about four to six hours. No special tools or prior skills needed, and the manuals are available before you buy.
Yes. Optional professional installation is available across 40+ U.S. states through our trusted installer network, covering site prep, footings, assembly, LED and motor integration, a quality check, and cleanup, backed by a workmanship warranty. Pricing varies by location, model, site conditions, and accessories, so we provide a flat-rate quote before scheduling. Reach the installation team at InstallationTeam@hansohome.com or +1 256 414 8620. You are also free to hire your own contractor through a service like Angi or Houzz.
A flat, stable surface. You can anchor to concrete, resin, paving slabs, porcelain or other tile, and wooden or composite decking. For tile, we recommend small concrete pads under the feet, or a full concrete base, to maximize stability and lifespan.
Every Hansø pergola ships in 12 to 14 weeks for $395 per order, direct from the factory to your driveway. The timeline is deliberate: shipping direct, with no warehouses or dealers in between, is what keeps the price where it is. Limited warehouse inventory is sometimes available for faster delivery, so ask the sales team about current stock. Optional shipping protection ($195) replaces any damaged, missing, or stolen parts directly, with no carrier paperwork, to keep your project on schedule.
Yes. It can be relocated once installed, and fully disassembled if you ever move house. Because the parts are bolted rather than welded, taking it down and setting it up again is straightforward.
Every Hansø pergola is backed by our 10-Year Limited Warranty. The aluminum frame and louvers are covered for a full decade against manufacturing defects. The finish and operating components are covered under their own terms within that warranty. Full details ship with your pergola and are available at hansohome.com/warranty.
